Hello Hilary,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

To resolve your issue we need more information. Let us know the following.

  1. Is this issue happening only with Excel and PowerPoint or do you also face this issue with other Office 2016 applications?

  2. Have you checked if the same issue occurs in Word 2016? Try creating a test document in Word 2016 and check if the same issue occurs.

To resolve this issue we will test if the issue happens while working in the Safe Mode in Excel and PowerPoint.

Follow the steps as suggested in the following Microsoft Article to open Excel 2016 and PowerPoint 2016 in the Safe Mode.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

Note: The above article lists steps for all Microsoft Office 2016 applications, however, follow the steps to open the application/program in the Safe Mode for which you are experiencing an issue – in your case Excel 2016 and PowerPoint 2016.

The above step opens Excel and PowerPoint in the Safe Mode. Check now if you are able to open and edit Excel files and PowerPoint presentations normally without the applications flashing/blinking.

If yes, then you may follow the next set of steps in the above mentioned article to troubleshoot Add-Ins in Excel 2016 and PowerPoint 2016.

Hope the above information helps.

Thank you.

I have the same problem.

I opened powerpoint and excel in safe mode which stopped the blinking/flashing. This does not occur in Word or OneNote for me.

I have Office 365 ProPlus Version 16.0.6001.1608 running on Windows 7 SP1 Build 7601 V6.1.7601

I am seeing the same issue. Running PowerPoint and Excel in safe mode stopped the flickering in each application.

However, when I turn off ALL add-ins and re-run these 2 apps (not in safe mode) the flickering returns.

The entire screen flickers in just these 2 apps every few seconds.

I am running Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus version 16.0.6001.1068

Any Suggestions?

Thanks

I didn't get a chance to try the recommended steps and the flickering finally just stopped the next day - not sure why it started, not sure why why it stopped.

I am seeing the same issue with Excel, but also within Outlook.  I can hardly add an attachment because of the flickering.  The flickering stops in safe mode, but returns when running normal with ALL add-ins disabled.

I am running Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 (16.0.4266.1001)

Thanks.

Your installation of Office is way out of date.  The current version is 16.0.7070.2028.

Try updatings (File>Account>Update Options) and see if that overcomes the problem

You might also t ry repairing the Office installation as detailed in the Knowledge Base article at:

I have that same problem with PowerPoint 2016: the screen flashes every about 10 seconds. In safe mode the flashing does not happen. I have now removed all add-ins, while in safe mode. When I am back in 'normal' mode, the flashes start again. This is a fairly new behavior, which did not exist about 2 months ago.

I also did a repair on PPt, with no effect: the flashing persists.

Hello,

Let's get this sorted. Please perform the steps below and check if it helps:

1. Repair your Office application via this link.

2. Perform a clean boot. It will start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and start up programs. It also helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program, or an update, or when you run a program in Windows.

Let us know the result.

Thank you.

RO

Safe mode disables ALL addins. If you disable addins and still see the effect

Did you disable all 3 types of addins?
