Ground Beef Pie With Kidney Beans
04/24/2014
please note that SHEPHERDS pie is made with lamb - hence the name shepherd - sheep herder -if you make it with beef it is called cottage pie

So quick and easy to make AND my husband loved it! Will certainly be making this again. Great meal to make after a busy day at work!

I didn't care for this and it's annoying that people rate recipes not on the recipe as is, but based on the changes they made to it. If you're going to review a recipe, review the recipe, not your version of it. I look at the rating to see if it's something I want to make and when people rate it based on their version it throws off the rating. Based on how this recipe is, I wouldn't recommend it, it's not anywhere near a shepherd's pie.

At the recommendation of others, browned chopped onions with the meat and added corn and some garlic flavoring; used salsa instead of picante sauce, home made mashed potatoes, and omitted sugar; and broiled in oven to brown slightly. If I were to do it again, I would add chopped tomatoes and perhaps peas instead of the corn. It was a hit with everyone!

Made a healthier version which was very good - easy and made ahead! Used half sweet with regular potatoes and only 1 cup. Used ground turkey instead of beef. Didn't have picante, so used regular salsa. Omitted sugar. Added chopped cilantro. Followed rest of recipe. But after making bean/turkey mixture, I put it in a teflon coated pan and added mashed potatoes spread evenly on top, followed by cheese. I let this sit for about an hour or so until we were ready to have dinner. Then in preheated 350 degree oven, I baked it for about 30-45 minutes or until heated through and cheese was lightly browned. YUMMY! Served with a green salad.

Husband and I enjoyed this. I used two large russet potatoes. We both added a little salt when eating. Easy to put together. A definite repeat.
08/16/2013
I substituted real mashed potatoes for the boxed ones.

Pretty good and easy to make for a weeknight. I used homemade garlic mashed potatoes vs. the prepared. I only had tomatillo salsa on hand. Next time I might use more like an enchilada sauce on the meat. I did add some diced onion and minced garlic to the meat. I'd make it again.

I changed some things up and this turned out sooooo good!! First, I used plain old hamburger instead of ground sirloin (1lb instead of 3/4lb). Then I chopped up an onion and cooked it with the meat. (I also like to rinse the meat afterward and run it through my food processor, but that's just my preference.) Then I use salsa instead of picante sauce and I use more like 1 cup instead of 3/4 cup. I also throw in half a bag of frozen corn (cooked), and 1-2 finely grated carrots. I used red beans instead of kidney beans because that's what I had. I added some taco seasoning because I have a can of it, then I skipped the cheese because this stuff is already packed with flavor (and I was trying to keep it somewhat healthy), and I just used one package of instant roasted garlic potatoes. Made GREAT leftovers!!

This was surprisingly tasty. I made a few subs - ground turkey, homemade leftover mashed potatoes and black beans instead of kidney. It is very easy and I will make it again if I have the right ingredients in the house.

I don't care whether this is called shepherds pie, cottage pie of what.....we really liked it! I added garlic, green and yellow peppers to ground sirloin while browning. I also changed regular mashed potatoes to mashed sweet potatoes and used a mild sweet salsa. I stuck with the kidney beans. This was a hit and we will be having this again! Thank you for the recipe and ideas!
03/23/2012
Wow- this was really great. The picante sauce I had was more of a hot sauce-style than a salsa, so it was a fiery dish! Of course, I substituted ground turkey for the beef, and served it with a thick whole grain bread on the side. This is going to be a regular on our menu!

This was a decent good week night dinner. It was tasty and my family enjoyed it. I did need to double it though, the recipe was not enough for 4.

I am not a Shepards Pie purist so I can't comment on the name of what it should be called. However it is a very easy to make recipe, even with modifications. My hubs and I devour this! I took other reviewers advice and added a can of corn and chopped up green pepper and onion. I left out the sugar. And the first time I made it, I didn't have picante sauce so I improvised with all I could come up with...a jar of Paul Newman's Black Bean & Corn salsa!! Somehow, it still turned out yummy so we made it the same way (on purpose this time) for the second time tonight. it's total comfort food and I would share this recipe with any of my friends!
01/23/2012
This sounds really tasty, but I would like to second that this is not a Shepherd's Pie, but a Cottage Pie.
01/21/2012
My family polished this one off all three generations LOVED IT. I used black beans instead of kidney bean because I prefer them. Refrigerated ready made baked potatoes made this so speedy to whip up last minute.
09/23/2011
sounds like a yummy recipe but it's not shepherds pie as shepherds pie is made with lamb mince hence the title. If you are making it with beef it's cottage pie. Odd mix of ingredients as well tex-mex feel? Think I will stick to the traditional Irish version.
03/22/2011
This wasn't bad, but nothing special either. I added onions and cooked them in the skillet with the beef. I also added some cinnamon to the final product to add a little more flavor to the beef.
03/06/2011
Purchased a Cooking Light Book from Target - and this gem was in it. My Uncle was so excited. I used Pace HOT Picante Sauce and he LOVED it.
02/02/2011
I like my shepherd's pie to have veggies so I added onion, bell pepper and corn to the mixture. I left out the sugar but added some chipotle chili powder. Also baked it for about 10 minutes. I really liked it with those changes, hubby said he would eat it again too. OH, and i used ground turkey instead of sirloin.
01/24/2011
I was surprised at how good this turned out. It was easy to make and very tasty. I will definitely make it again. I added 1/2 and onion and some corn, and used a whole pound of beef instead of 3/4 of a pound.
01/24/2011
Very Easy and Really Yummy - especially on a cold winter day!! I made it with 1 1/2 lb. of grnd. meat. Also...1 Tablespoon of Cumin for 3/4 pound of meat seems very strong (typo??)...I only used about 1 Teaspoon for my 1.5 pounds of meat; and used a 16 oz. jar of medium salsa for the picante sauce.
01/15/2011
This was delicious. I added peas and colored bell peppers!
01/12/2011
I never thought of using picante sauce or other tomatoey sauces in it. Now I will have to see how else I can jazz it up. Mine is more traditional style by making a rue and adding corn, green beans, carrots, etc.
01/12/2011
This is a family favorite. It is an easy meal to put together during a busy week. I like to double the recipe so that we have leftovers. It might not be a "real" shepherd's pie, but it is on our menu at least once a month during the colder months and I am glad I tried it.
01/12/2011
This was good although, as others have mentioned, it is not a traditional Shepherd's Pie. Instead of mashed potatoes on the top I used polenta, and baked at 350 for about 20 min.
01/12/2011
This sounds great, especially with the onion, green peppers, and corn added. We love hot stuff, so I may use hot banana peppers instead of green peppers. Can't wait to try with ground turkey breast. Sounds like it should be re-named though - maybe Tex-Mex Shepherd's Pie? That way people won't be expecting a recipe for traditional Shepherd's Pie.
01/11/2011
This was the worst shepherd's pie I have ever made or ate. Very disappointing.
09/22/2010
This is definitely not shepherd's pie. It tasted quite funny with the cumin and picante sauce. Perhaps it would be better served over rice. Tastes very tex-mex. I regret making so much and wasting some nice organic ground beef on this recipe. To make a REAL quick shepherd's pie, throw out the cumin, picante sauce, beans, and cheese. Add in peas, carrots, and brown gravy. Bake it for awhile if you have the time. Trust me, it will be much tastier.
08/15/2010
I bake the whole thing for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees before serving.
05/30/2010
Yummy! I used Bison meat and had my own mashed potatoes left over from a previous meal. Very easy to make.
04/16/2010
Whatever you want to call it is OK with me...it was very good...and easy for a quick weekday meal. I used medium picante sauce...so it was not too bland and not too hot. Served with a simple side salad. I'll definitely make again. I like all the suggestions for variations.
04/02/2010
This was delicious; I added some minced garlic, diced pepper and onion when I was browning the meat.(suggested by a previous viewer.) I made my own mashed potatoes after all ingredients were added(except the potatoes),I put the mixture in a casserole dish, spread the potatoes on top and browned it under the broiler.
03/31/2010
This is not shepherd's pie, nor cottage pie. I make real cottage/shepherd's pie on a regular basis, and it is just as easy as this while much tastier. Ground beef or lamb, savory gravy, and onions/carrots (sometimes to get in more veg, I throw in some peas or 'shrooms.) Topped by smashed potatoes and if you don't have cholesterol issues, drizzle a little melted butter over.
03/30/2010
I make this recipe about every two weeks. I add onion, corn, and green pepper to the browned ground beef. My husband loves it. So easy!
03/30/2010
This isn't Shepherd's Pie, it's Cottage Pie, Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb, Cottage Pie is made with beef. But saying that, this is nowhere near what a Shepherd's/Cottage pie should be. It's a chilli with mash and cheese on top. Also, to Lilybelle, there shouldn't be creamed corn in Shepherd's/Cottage Pie either. Shepherd's/Cottage Pie should be ground beef or lamb, onions, carrots and seasonings in a rich gravy covered in mashed potato. Cheese is not traditional for a British pie either.
03/30/2010
Can't wait to try this ~ a new take on one of our favorites ~ Shepherd's Pie!
03/30/2010
Had a bunch of leftover pulled pork so used it without picante sauce. The sauce from the pork was better. The family loved it. Great keeper recipe. Served with fruit salad.
03/30/2010
Looking forward to giving it a try this week. Enjoyed the comment above about shepherd's pie having ground beef and cream corn---guess shepherds now raise cows rather than sheep, and corn rather than potatoes! ;^)
03/30/2010
This is one of our favorite recipes! It isn't a traditional sheperd's pie but it is delicious and very quick! Perfect for a week night!
11/15/2009
while this is not traditional Shepherd's pie, my whole family really liked it and I will make it again. However, I did change it up a bit. I doubled it, used white beans instead of Kidney beans (only one can) and then added a can of cut green beans and a can of corn. Yummy
04/24/2009
Just like the last reviewer, this is NOT Shepperds Pie, Sheppers Pie is plain ground beef with creamed corn and mashed potatoes.
